Accidents Spur Texting While Driving LawMany car accidents in Missouri are caused by texting while driving. This can lead to serious injuries and sometimes death. Currently, Missouri has a law that bans texting while driving. However, it is only unlawful for drivers aged 21 and under to text and drive at the same time. While this law was a step in the right direction, it doesn’t seem to make much sense. I am not aware of any studies that show drivers over the age of 21 are better at texting while driving. It might be argued that drivers over the age of 21 have more experience driving, and, therefore, have the ability to do more than one thing while driving. However, I find that argument weak. When a person is driving his or her focus should be on the road and other vehicles, regardless of that person’s age. Some good news is that earlier this month the Federal Goverment, in an effort to reduce fatal accidents, enacted a law which makes it illegal for truckers and bus drivers to text or talk on the phone while driving. However, drivers of regular vehicles over the age of 21 in Missouri are free to talk and text on the phone without breaking the law. Thankfully, Missouri Senator Ryan McKenna has introduced SB 701. This Bill, if passed, would provide a universal ban on texting while driving. In turn, it would be illegal to drive and text at the same time no matter what age you are. This law would be a crucial step to making Missouri roadways a safer place.
